The Borough of Leonia was established as a colony for artists in 1668. Known as the Art Center, Leonia was attractive to artisits and writers because of its picturesque location on the Palisades and its easy access to the galleries of New York City. Leonia has a diverse population of approximately 8,900.
St John the Evangelist Catholic School is a small parish school situated in Leonia, New Jersey.
In 1941 the School Sisters of Notre Dame opened the school with a class of 38 boys and 33 girls. Since that time it has endured the changing face of the community and presently educates 170 children grades Pre K-4 through Grade 8.
As an integral part of the Catholic School system in the Archdiocese of Newark, the school curriculum encompasses all of the required coursework and extends to Art, Spanish, Computer education, Music, and Physical Education. Our student population is composed of children from many surrounding towns and from varied ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

The purpose of St. John the Evangelist Catholic School is to provide a climate where faith, trust and love for God and others is encouraged, lived and witnessed; to enable children to develop their potential and to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to contribute to a just and healthy society and establish structures to work for peace in our world. St. John School embraces cultural diversity in an atmosphere of understanding and respect.
